A paintball mask is so much more then just something you wear to try and intimidate your opponent and a lot more is required of them then just protecting your eyeballs from stray paintballs. A good paintball mask should be a priority for you. Some of the more extravagant paintball masks are light and you'll barely notice you're wearing one. A good paintball mask also provides significant lightweight padding on the inside as well as thermal lenses to prevent fogging up during play. If you don't want or can't afford a paintball mask you can also go with a good set of goggles but I strongly recommend you go with a paintball mask because of the overall protection it provides for your face, eyes and ears.
When buying a mask one of the most important things to do is actually try it on. If possible you should bring your paintball gun along to see if you can properly aim with your paintball mask on.
It's also important to try the paintball mask on and look out of the corners of your eyes. You will need to have good peripheral vision on the paintball field with your paintball mask on so make sure that you have good vision to all sides when wearing the paintball mask.
Buy A Paintball Mask With Thermal Lenses
I can't stress the importance of thermal lenses enough. There's a 100% chance that you will be breathing hard while playing paintball and if your paintball mask is not equipped with thermal lenses then chances are that at some point your lenses will fog up. Nothing like impaired vision during a competitive paintball game...
Other things to look for in a paintball mask. Paintball masks are designed to protect your face from paintballs so make sure to buy a paintball mask that adequately covers your face as well as your ears. Getting hit in the ears is pretty painfull as well so make sure to get a paintball mask that fully covers your ears.
The padding inside your paintball mask is important as well. You want soft and cushiony padding inside your helmet that conforms to your face. Take a look inside and look at the quality of the padding and how it is attached to the inside of the paintball mask. Look for padding that is cleanly and evenly glued onto the inside of the paintball mask. This may seem trivial but a job well done here is usually evidence of a well constructed paintball mask.
